Netflix’s The Last Dance removes ‘disrespectful’ dig at Barack Obama after mass backlash

NETFLIX’s The Last Dance has removed a disrespectful dig at former US president Barack Obama.

The 58-year-old was referred to as a “former Chicago resident” which didn’t go down very well and was changed by the streaming platform.

Obama makes several appearances in the 10- part docu-series, and for the first time in a long time, he was addressed by a different title.

In one of the latest episodes that dropped last night, the former leader of the States was rightly described as ‘President Barack Obama.’

Jason Hehir, The Last Dance director, previously assured the name used to address the first black president was an “inside joke in our editing room”.

Another former president, Bill Clinton, was also referred to as the ‘former Arkansas Governor’ on screen.

Hehir told Boston.com: “I was pretty adamant that when we have a celebrity, we wanted it to be organic to the story.

“We don’t want to just have a president for president’s sake… The reason he was in there is that he was a former Chicago resident.”

He added: “I’ve seen people who are investigating whether I’m a Democrat or Republican.”

“I’m a huge Obama fan, so for people to say it’s disrespectful and I did that on purpose? I mean, come on. I promise you he will be the president by the end of the series.”

The documentary follows the Chicago Bulls on their journey to winning their sixth and still to this day, their final NBA championship in 1997/1998.

It focuses specifically on star player Michael Jordan who many regard as the greatest to ever play the game, and his incredible teammates and great players in their own right, the ever reliable Scottie Pippen, the incomparable Dennis Rodman and their brilliant coach, Phil Jackson.

Fans are treated to plenty of never-before-seen footage throughout the season as cameras were given unprecedented access to the team.

Half of the series has been released on Netflix so far and viewers have been transfixed by wild tales of sex, drugs, and partying going on behind the scenes, all while still focusing on winning a championship.
